MinistryWorks is a payroll service built for churches and ministries. Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company launched it in 2012 through its subsidiary MinistryWorks, LLC. Since September 9, 2025, it has been part of Brotherhood Works, which brings Brotherhood Mutual's people-care products under one brand.
The move to Brotherhood Works
The payroll side is now offered by Brotherhood Works, LLC.
Payroll is just one piece of that family. Alongside it, the other Brotherhood Works products include:
- Payroll and HR
- Background screening
- Workers comp
- Missions care
- Employee benefits
- Accident insurance
What the payroll service handles
This service is made for Christian organizations, and Brotherhood Mutual reports that more than 8,000 of them rely on it. Every church gets a dedicated personal payroll specialist.
For taxes, it takes care of federal, state and local tax filing. On top of that, W-2s and 1099s are prepared for you, IRS compliance is supported, and help is available when workers comp audits come up.
Paying a pastor through MinistryWorks
Pastors face different tax rules than most employees, and the service is designed around that. It supports pastors with dual tax status. With dual tax status, a pastor counts as an employee for income tax purposes but as self-employed when it comes to Social Security and Medicare.
Clergy housing allowances are covered too. A housing allowance is the portion of a pastor's pay the church designates for housing, and it can be excluded from income tax. When the pastor owns or rents a home, the tax-free amount is the lowest of 3 figures: the amount the church designated, what the pastor actually spent, and the fair rental value of the home plus utilities.
Here's a quick example using the IRS rules: if the church set aside $20,000, the pastor spent $18,500, and the home's rental value plus utilities is $24,000, then $18,500 is tax-free and the extra $1,500 is taxed. You can try your own numbers in our housing allowance calculator.
When a pastor lives in a parsonage, the full fair rental value is tax-free. A utilities allowance paid separately is tax-free up to the amount actually spent on utilities.
Dual tax status also means the pastor owes self-employment tax on salary plus housing. In 2026, a pastor paid $60,000 would owe about $8,478, or roughly $2,119 a quarter, based on the wage base of $184,500 and our SECA tax calculator.
Extra HR and time-tracking tools
Churches can go beyond basic payroll by adding time tracking or an HCM tier. HCM is a bundle of HR tools that works alongside payroll. The HCM tiers help with bringing new staff aboard, signing employees up for benefits and keeping documents stored in one place.
Churches can also add Pay-Go, a pay-as-you-go workers comp plan that works with payroll.
Price and fees
Brotherhood Mutual doesn't list a payroll price publicly. Churches need to request a quote. As for the HCM add-on, it is only described as a few dollars per employee, with the exact figure quoted for each church.
The client expectations document names 2 fees, and each one hinges on timing:
| Charge | When it kicks in | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Late submission | Payroll submitted later than 1:00 p.m. ET on the input day | $25.00 |
| Correction | Reports confirmed past 2:00 p.m. ET deadline | $30.00 (may apply) |
To avoid both fees, send payroll in before 1:00 p.m. Eastern on the input date and check your reports before 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
How do I find the MinistryWorks login?
There are two login pages, one for each payroll system. If you're not sure which one your church is on, ask whoever runs payroll, or try both.
- Evolution: employee self-serve sign-in happens at ministryworks.evolutionpayroll.com.
- isolved: you sign in through the isolved People Cloud at ministryworks.myisolved.com.
Getting your paystub as an employee
Employees can receive paystubs by email or view them by signing into ESS. ESS means employee self-service, which is the section where you see your own pay records.
